You are definitely on to something. Steven Chu, the U.S. Secretary of Energy and a Nobel prize-winning scientist, suggested this same thing. No only did he suggest painting roofs white, but pavement as well.

"... if you look at all the buildings and make all the roofs white, and if you make the pavement a more concrete-type of colour than a black-type of colour, and you do this uniformly ... It's the equivalent of reducing the carbon emissions due to all the cars in the world by 11 years," Chu said.

I think the main issue may be psychological. We're so used to seeing dark roofs and black top pavements. However, according to the Washington Post there appears to be a movement afoot, especially with flat roofs that can't be seen from the street.

Excellent deduction on your part to make the connection between white ice and painting roofs white.

Dear editor, i was watching an episode of Fearless Planet on Discovery last night, about how the glaciers in Alaska help to keep the Earth cool, not because thet are cold, but because they are White and reflect heat. I had an idea...would it help if a campaign was started world wide to paint all buildings roofs white? I live in Johannesburg South Africa and my area has a lot of townhouse complexes, if the roof of these homes where white, do you think this could help to make a difference in global warming???? I would Really appreciate any feedback.
